Gangaur Festival Celebrations

Rajasthan may be India’s driest and most arid state, but when it comes to sheer color and exuberance, it’s hard to beat.  And Rajasthan is best seen in all its colors at the time of Gangaur, the spring festival dedicated to the goddess of abundance, Gauri (Parvati). Gangaur is a largely female-centric festival, in that most of the festivities and pujas are conducted by women. The Festival is observed throughout the state with great enthusiasm and devotion by womenfolk.

The Gangaur festival is the celebration of monsoon, harvest and martial fidelity. Women worship Gauri, the consort of Lord Shiva. The word ‘Gangaur’ is literally made up of two words, ‘Gana’ and ‘Gaur’. ‘Gana’ is synonymous with Lord Shiva and ‘Gaur’ which stands for Gauri or Parvati symbolizes Saubhagya (marital bliss). Gauri is the personification of excellence and marital love.

The festival commences on Holi. The festival runs through many days. Young girls pray for grooms of their choice while married women seek a long life for their husbands. The ladies beautify their hands and feet by temporary decoration by drawing designs with Mehendi.

Alsisar Hotels also host the grand festival of Gangaur with ‘Isar Gangaur Puja’ followed by grand procession and the fair at Alsisar Mahal, Shekhawati. This year the Gangaur procession would fall on March25 and 26, 2012. A grand procession of beautifully ornamented elephants, camels, horses and dancing people with joyous children & drummers carries the idol of Gauri in beautifully decorated gold and silver a palanquin.

All newly married women must fast for the whole 18 days of the festival. Even unmarried women fast and only eat one meal a day, in the hope of finding a good husband. Gangaur is also an auspicious time of year to select a life partner. Tribal men and women get the opportunity to meet and interact, pick there partners, elope and marry.

During the Gangaur Festival, a sweet dish called ghewar is popularly distributed amongst friends and relatives.
