Nawalgarh: the fascinating town of Painted Havelis
Shekhawati is a magnificent town of Rajasthan which is known for its rich fresco trails and beautifully painted havelis (mansions). In the frescoed town of shekhawati is a tiny little hamlet named Nawalgarh which is just about 8 kms away from our heritage palace Alsisar Mahal. As Nawalgarh has some of the most well-preserved and finest examples of Shekhawati havelis, we will introduce to you this mesmerizing world of painted walls and ceilings.
Each haveli in Nawalgarh follow the same traditional architectural pattern — there is a grand entrance first, with a courtyard where the men of the family could receive guests or tourists later, then the main entrance (beyond which in ancient times the women could not step out), where on the lower floor was the kitchen, water store and another drawing room where more important guests might be invited, and an upper floor that has bedrooms with a terrace on top. Each and every surface of each and every wall in the havelis of Nawalgarh is filled with varied frescoes, depicting everything from mythology to the kings, trains, Europeans and daily life. In the olden days, the paintings were like TV — for instance, not everyone in the town could go to Bombay to see the train, so the merchants who had been there described what a train looked like, to the artists, who painted them on the walls of their havelis for the people to see the world out of their town through these paintings!
It is really interesting to see that these painted havelis of Rajasthan not just offer a virtual tour of all of Rajasthan but also the important things from other cultures of India and the world. Most of the rooms in the havelis of Nawalgarh have been converted into galleries, which display everything related to Rajasthani culture, from carving and paintings of different regions, to turbans, wedding dresses, many forts and palaces of Rajasthan, musical instruments, jewellery, marble work and miniature paintings. A tour of the havelis of Nawalgarh is just breathtaking! Imagine living in a house that was so gaily painted — here you are sure to find a painting for any mood and any situation!
Elaborate architecture of the havelis of Nawalgarh and the murals and frescoes painted on them do justice to the epithet “Open Air Art Gallery” that is often applied to this region.
